The Companie José Besprosvany was created in 1986. With this company, the choreographer and director José Besprosvany leads a reflection of and a search for choreographic and theatrical creation, in which the principal objective is the realisation of works which offer new connections and opinions about movement, music and text.
In recent years, the work of the creation of the Compagnie runs along two important lines: on the one hand, the relation—with its infinite variations—between movement and narration, and on the other hand, openness to non-European cultures. These two lines have guided the artistic work in projects that could seem very different, but which find coherence in their questioning and their groundwork.
At a time when cultural uniformity is becoming more and more banal, to focus on the differences and the connexions to the Other has become ever more important; diversity and the riches of cultural differences become increasingly lost in a unified global culture. And yet, these cultures can teach us boundless wisdom. Furthermore, parallel to the tendency toward political and economic unity, general artistic creation—and particularly the performing arts—often depend upon a continual quest for formal modernism.
Consequently, for the Compagnie José Besprosvany, revisiting non-European cultures and questioning modernism has become an artistic necessity. It is therefore this desire to un-compartmentalise, in the formal or aesthetic as well as in the dramaturgical, that has allowed for the creation of unexpected spectacles as heterogeneous as they are unclassifiable
